CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. CanSkate is a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Lessons are given in a group format and led by our NCCP certified professional coach, Joanne Macnair. Joanne is assisted by trained Program Assistants drawn from the WLSC's Senior level skaters.
Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs.
CanSkate provides a pathway for skaters to enjoy skating recreationally, or go on to participate in ice sports such as figure skating, hockey and ringette. Skills learned are categorized within the CanSkate Fundamental Movements:
Go Forward, Go Backward, Stop, Turn, Spin, and Jump
Skaters progress from Stage 1 through Stage 7 in the program, earn report cards and other incentives along the way.
These sessions are 45 minutes twice a week:
Monday & Wednesday 4:00 - 4:45 pm (excluding all holidays and other days as posted)

RECOMMENDED SKATING ATTIRE
- Coaches Recommend wearing layers of warm, comfortable clothing such as tights, long johns, sweat pants, sweaters, jackets mitts or gloves (no hockey gloves).
- Well fitting skates that provide firm support are critical to the success of the CanSkater. Either figure skates or hockey skates can be worn.
- Tie skates firmly around the ankle area and slightly looser in the foot and toe area, leaving 2-3 inches of lace tails. Laces should not drag on the ice.
- Blades need to be sharp and in good shape without nicks or rust - please use skate guards when not on the ice.
- CSA APPROVED HELMETS ARE MANDITORY - SKATERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT A HELMET.
